Lyle Says..

GOD’s Mentors create actions. Such was a conversation I had the other day with a couple of workers in a testing center. We were discussing the rush rush of everyday life and how it seems that much is missed during it. I related a story of one of my mentors, Lyle.

Lyle was a neighbor and a great friend I had about (many) years ago. Lyle worked as a guidance counselor at a state hospital dealing with recovering alcoholics and had done so for 20+ years. In addition his faith was Methodism and I would refer to Lyle as a Christian. We had stopped for coffee one day and Lyle was somewhat distant, immersed in thoughts. I asked him what was going on.

“The great diet that I have been on and I have lost a lot of weight, has been liver cancer. It appears as I have just a few weeks before it wins. As a 12 steps counselor I find I have been going through all the steps. Today denial gives way to acceptance.”

I chose to spend my time with Lyle on  morning walks with Lyle during the ensuing days. I will never forget one of the last days. We met outside and were walking around the neighborhood. I asked how he was doing. “It is interesting, Dennis. The greens have never been greener, the roses never more fragrant….”

Not too much later Lyle passed away at 53. We had shared a number of great moments together. Leading a summer parks ministry program, and retreats. He got me to begin thinking and that ended up with my launching Unorthodox Christianity.com some years later when the internet took over the universe.

So I was sharing this story with the two workers during a lull in their testing and no one else about. THE RUSH RUSH OF EVERY DAY. I mentioned that it got me to thinking.

“What do you think is the worst possible thing that you could ever hear from GOD?”

I went on, “I hear and read lots about GOD’s judgement. I hear how judgmental GOD can be and how strict and difficult GOD can be to those who do not ‘toe the line.’ So I have developed this scene that better describes what Lyle says and I believe that developed from this incident. I image that I have passed away and am in whatever place one passes away to. I have lived most of my life as a human being. I am fortunate to be one of the few who knows what GOD looks like. GOD has a big dent in GOD’S forehead from the many times GOD has struck GOD’s forehead and has said, “Dennis, you have done it again. I had made all the plans necessary to answer your prayer and you have changed your direction and now I have to start all over again.” The truth is that GOD started over again, next to me the whole way. Providing new mentors, new friends, new jobs, and more education. On this day, I am now at GOD’s spiritual home. I have been invited to have coffee with GOD and I go in. I reiterate:

“What do you think is the worst possible thing that you could ever hear from GOD?”

GOD sits back in the chair and asks me a question. “You know Dennis, I have not been to Earth for some time now. Tell me, what does a rose smell like on the first bloom of spring?”

I look back on my life and think. “I am sorry, I can’t say I know.”
God  shakes GOD’s head and says, “That is so unfortunate, for this was your only opportunity to find out.”
There was no hell or damnation. There was no screaming or hollering. There was a simple truth. I am ready for GOD, because Lyle says..’The greens have never been greener and the roses have never been more fragrant…… Stop and smell the roses…Lyle says.”

Today those ladies know what the roses smell like on the first bloom of spring. Feel free to share this story with your friends, Facebook and any other encounter. These are the messages all of us are given to share. We are the spokespeople for GOD. We are the mentors.rose-3756985_960_720

What a Friend

I am thinking of a favorite song. “What a friend I have in Jesus..”

I have read much about how stern and strict GOD is. I am always confused. I have been also told that GOD is Love. “My Father who are art in Heaven…….Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who have trespassed against us..” The good news is not centered in condemnation or punishment. GOD does not need to do any more than let your own behavior run its course and let life take over.
Over the years my friends have been great listeners, advice givers, and counsolers. My hand has been held, and prayers have been given. The mentors are sent for my use. Not by a strict and all powerful something, but by a friend. Sitting down with a friend over coffee is a great gift that you miss when you have moved from them, or at this stage of my life they have passed. GOD never leaves. GOD is not dead. GOD is always listening, adapting your journey, finding new mentors and friends. GOD needn’t be approached in a mindset of change, but one of “Forgive them Father for they know not what they do.”  GOD wants successful living for all of us. Invite GOD for coffee and discuss what success is about.

“Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life and I shall live in the House of the Lord forever.”  dw 3-2-18

Houston – The Love

“Dad (my daughter wrote today)
The pictures of the flood are just incredible. It’s heartbreaking, but also heart warming to see people helping one another.”

I answered my daughter: “Yes it is. Disaster can bring out the best of the human spirit. The disaster comes from the physics of Earth. The help is the hands of people.”

Some in the religious communities are calling Hurricane Harvey a judgement of GOD.

Jesus requested, “Love One Another.”

GOD is plenty powerful enough that the wicked fall and fail without GOD’s help. In the crowds of millions affected by the flood are the greatest people on Earth. They include the best mothers, fathers, bosses, employees, Pastors, Priests, Shamans and simply people. They are just like us who have been fortunate to be somewhere else during the disaster. They join the ranks of people all over the world that have been devastated by disaster in their own corner of the world, large and dramatic, or a car wreck or a heart attack. During Katrina we looked at the protections built into other parts of the world, but Nature plays no favorites. What my daughter saw and we have watched on the daily news is the sheer power of LOVE to take hold of the human spirit and motivate it into positive action. Neighbors helping neighbors. People jumping into cars and trucks and driving to help other humans in need. There is no “I’m only going to help White people, or Black people, or Latino people or just Jews, or Muslims, or Christians. They are going to Houston to help people in need. Disaster UNITES people to help one another unlike any other event that crosses the paths of history.
And GOD puts people there to help. GOD plans for the future by placing people where they are needed the most. The term I use is “GOD watches out for the ignorant and uninformed.” And many more will come over the next many, many days and even years. There will be people that we disagree with that will be helping those who disagree with them. There will be people that cause us to by angry who will accomplish miracles and then call it the everyday.

“On Earth as is it in Heaven.” Pay attention and see it on the news, on You Tube or the internet. What is the Heaven you aspire to visit someday? You will see it on TV now. It is “Love One Another” in action. No buildings, no leaders, no politics. That is what makes people Great, helping one another.

Pray for the victims, pray for the helpers. Give strength to their stamina, and assistance for their help. Someday it will be us. It may be a big and dramatic event, or just in the neighborhood. This was the vision of Jesus, love your neighbor as yourself.

She Prays For Me – For Mother’s Day 2017

Re post from two weeks ago.

Something for Mother’s Day. From some time ago.

So there I was, searching for a song to sing Sunday for Mother’s Day. There just are not a lot of songs that people are familiar with about Mothers for the sake of Mother’s Day.  In a moment of desperation I wrote one. It was written for a compilation of my mother, my Grandmother, and my Aunt Vera. These are the primary group of women who filled the role of “mother” in my growing up. That role of “Mother” also, and often includes many different women for different people. In this “new age” Mom can be Dad. For some it may be the mom of a best friend where they spent a lot of time, for some a relative or mentor next door or at school. In the “new age” “mom’s role has been reshaped by care providers, counselors, mentors, relatives, neighbors and many others. In many ways this is a large change, because the role of Mother has always been a most important task to our created order.  In a country of single parents and restructured lifestyles, “mom” can be many different people.

This song, though, is about a central characteristic of what a Mom is to me, that care person who holds concern for you so deeply that prayer becomes the gift and the measure. Enjoy, and may this lyric be meaningful to you, as it is to me.

Nostagia

Sitting at today’s open house I took a trip down memory lane. I stumbled across Gunsmoke and Bonanza for a break from the mundane on the tv at the open house. I grew up with Gunsmoke and Bonanza,The Lone Ranger and Mighty Mouse. I was impressed and amazed by these old favorites. I remembered the lessons. The good guys won. The bad guys lost. No one swore and people spoke with respect. It was not R Rated or preceded by a warning.
Today, at my age, I still say Sir and Ma’am. I try to respect the opinions of others and I expect the same. I felt that stirring of hope as I did as a young man looking forward, not necessarily the same feeling today’s news brings. How did I ever make it this far?
Probably because I learned from Matt Dillon and Ben Cartwright. I watched Bonanza with the Grove’s who had the first color tv in the neighborhood. We talked across a living room table and the phone didn’t interrupt Sunday night and I didn’t spend quality time texting. Dick Grove retired to his basement after the show to write thank you notes to the customers he had met the week before as a traveling salesman.
Please and thank you were ingrained in my spirit.
It is hard to keep those days alive today. It can only be done in your own corner of the universe. Share your memories of your growing up. Before Vietnam, before Desert Storm.
The majority of us turned out well because of what we watched when television was entertainment and it’s education undefined. Watch a few episodes of Andy Griffith.
Thank you.

The Slow Tide

lowtide

Have you ever found progress to be an exacerbating program. One step forward and 2 steps back? The rewards that one dreams will come this afternoon haven’t arrived yet years later? Are we expecting too much, too soon? Or, have we not been entirely lost.
When I look back at the years gone by I see different answers to the original questions. Answers I never could have conceived of in my wildest dreams. Yet, over the years, I have made progress. As I look back I see the wealth of the journey thus far. Not the financial boon as experienced by some, but a journey that that has been filled with memories that I would never trade and of mentors who will be with me throughout the rest of my journey. I truly have been blessed. Yes, moving forward can be a slow process, but it sure beats moving backwards.
